Why Type Effectiveness Is Fundamental
Type matchups are the foundation of Pokémon strategy: super effective hits deal 2× damage, while not very effective hits deal 0.5×. Dual-type Pokémon multiply these effects - a Water/Flying type takes 4× damage from Electric moves (2× from each type). Immunities (0× damage) completely shut down certain strategies, like Ground-type moves against Flying-types.
Understanding these interactions helps you predict damage, choose switch-ins, and build teams with defensive synergy. Memorizing at minimum the weaknesses and resistances of your team's types is essential for competitive play.
